Got a question about your cat?

The ones I get asked most, answered short. If yours is not here, ask Pumo and you will have an answer in seconds.

It hits 45 in the summer. Should he stay indoors?

Indoors is safer here by a wide margin: no burning tarmac, no cars, no fighting over a bin. Give him shade, moving air, and more than one water bowl kept away from the food and refilled every day. If he pants, drools, or goes quiet in a way that is not like him, that is a vet now, not later.

I just got a kitten. What does it need in the first week?

One small quiet room with food, water, a litter box away from both, and somewhere to hide. Keep him on exactly the food he was already eating and change it slowly. Book the first vet visit inside that week, because that visit is what sets the whole vaccination and worming calendar.

When does he need vaccinations and worming?

A kitten gets a first course with boosters, then a check every year after that, and worming runs on its own interval alongside it. The exact dates depend on his age and where he came from, so your vet sets them at the first visit. Add him to Pumo and the adviser keeps the calendar for you.

Should I have him neutered, and when?

I would, yes. It settles the spraying, the yowling and the wandering, and it is the one thing any of us here can actually do about the number of kittens on the street. When he is ready is a question for your vet, so ask at the first visit rather than guessing from a forum.

How much should he actually eat in a day?

It moves with his weight, his age, whether he is neutered and whether he goes out, so the number on the pack is a starting point rather than an answer. Tell Pumo his weight and the portion is worked out from that. If he is losing weight and you changed nothing, see a vet before you change the food.

What about the litter box?

One box per cat plus a spare, somewhere quiet, and never next to the food. Scoop it every day and he will use it. A cat who stops using the box is telling you something is wrong, with the box or with him, and one straining in it without producing urine is an emergency.

He keeps bringing up hairballs. Is that normal?

A little of it is normal with a thick coat, and brushing him is most of the answer. What is not normal is trying to bring something up with nothing coming, or it happening often, or him going off his food alongside it. That is a vet visit, not a grooming problem.

Do I need flea and tick treatment if he never goes out?

Yes. There is no winter here, so parasites never get a break, and they arrive on shoes, on visitors and through a window screen. Prevention in Muscat runs all year. Which product and how often is your vet's call, on his weight and his age, and I am not going to name either.

Can a street cat come and live inside?

Yes, and a lot of homes here started exactly that way. Keep him in his own room, away from any cat you already have, until a vet has seen him and said he is clear. The vet comes before the introduction, not after it, and that order is the whole of the advice.

When is it an emergency?

Collapsed, bleeding, struggling to breathe, having a fit, swallowed something he should not have, straining in the litter box with no urine coming, or simply not himself in a way that frightens you. Close this and phone a clinic. Every minute spent typing is a minute not spent in the car.

What is the Pumo adviser, and what does it cost?

A free pet adviser that answers in English or Arabic, written for Muscat rather than for somewhere with a winter. Nothing to pay, and no account needed to start. It asks for a number only if you want it to keep your cat's file between one question and the next.

Is it a vet?

No. It is software, an automated assistant, not a person and not a veterinarian. It does not diagnose, it does not prescribe, and it cannot examine your cat. Describe a symptom and it stops before it answers and hands you a vet instead of an opinion.

Not here? Ask him yourself.
